Frequently asked questions

Does HazScan work without an internet connection?

Yes. The entire 2024 Emergency Response Guidebook database ships inside the app, and all placard recognition happens on your device. HazScan makes no network requests and works fully offline — in dead zones, tunnels, and remote areas.

Why does the app need camera access?

The camera is used solely to recognize hazmat placards in real time, processed on-device with Apple's Vision framework. No images or video are captured, stored, or transmitted. You can review this in our Privacy Policy.

Which devices and iOS versions are supported?

HazScan requires iPhone running iOS 16 or later.

How accurate is placard recognition?

Camera-based (OCR) recognition is inherently imperfect and can be affected by lighting, angle, weather, and placard condition. HazScan is a supplementary reference for the first few minutes of an incident — always verify against official sources and never rely on it as your sole means of identification. See the Terms & Conditions for full details.

Where is my scan history stored, and how do I clear it?

Scan history is stored only on your device and is never transmitted to us or anyone else. Deleting the app removes all local history completely.

Is HazScan affiliated with the DOT or the official ERG?

No. HazScan is an unofficial, independent tool. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or produced by the U.S. DOT, PHMSA, Transport Canada, or Mexico's SCT. The ERG is public-domain reference material.
